Strategic Planning
91心頭利's mission statement defines the university as “preeminent,” a distinction that depends, broadly, on success in four key areas. For W&M, preeminence means that our distinctive public liberal arts and sciences model reliably delivers elite results on a focused set of national metrics — student demand, research, academic excellence, and graduate outcomes — creating a virtuous cycle that amplifies talent, resources, and impact.
President Katherine A. Rowe and the Board of Visitors have affirmed these four pillars and the foundation on which they rest: the outstanding talent of W&M's faculty and staff. The university’s next strategic plan will focus on these five, evergreen imperatives.
Strategic approach
In 2026, W&M approaches strategic planning with a long view. Our vision is to sustain national preeminence through the mid-century, 2050. Given the pace of change in higher education, our horizon of impact is shorter: the coming decade. This spring, we aim to engage the campus community in identifying near-term actions for the next 3-5 years that will advance our national position in key areas.
