Thinking Sculpture | Sculpture Thinking
April 1, 2026
What is it about art that resonates so deeply with us? How do we experience it emotionally, cognitively, and physically—and how do we articulate those responses? These questions are all the more compelling to consider within the context of abstract art. Through a collaborative partnership between the Muscarelle Museum of Art, Professor of Art Elizabeth Mead, and Associate Professor of Psychological Sciences Jennifer Stevens, Thinking Sculpture | Sculpture Thinking presents works by sculptor James Sullivan. This exhibition serves as the central laboratory for the interdisciplinary course Neuroaesthetics: The Artist and the Mind. The event will feature remarks fromJames Sullivan on his artistic practice, along with presentations from faculty and students sharing insights from their research initiatives emerging from the course. Join us for an evening of discovery as we reflect on an enduring and provocative question: how can we begin to quantify the qualitative experience of art?
