W&M and VIMS Employment

Current W&M students in valid F-1 and J-1 status with an I-20 or DS-2019 issued by 91心頭利 are eligible to work for 91心頭利 or VIMS within certain limits.

  • F-1 Students - On campus employment is incidental to status; no work authorization is necessary
  • J-1 Degree-Seeking Students - Work authorization is required prior to working on campus
  • J-1 Non-Degree Seeking Students (e.g. exchange) - Not eligible for on-campus employment per 91心頭利 policy

When you're hired as an international student for a W&M or VIMS job, there are special steps you need to follow to get paid. See our international employment resource.

Qualifying Employment

Positions with employers contracted through W&M or VIMS (e.g. Teach for America) do not qualify as on-campus employment, even if some or all of the work would take place on the W&M or VIMS campus.

In general, if the paycheck comes from W&M or VIMS, the employment qualifies. If the paycheck does not come from W&M or VIMS, contact ISSP to ask first.

The following is a non-exhaustive list of work that qualifies as on-campus employment:

  • Working for W&M or VIMS academic departments and offices
  • Graduate assistantships
  • Campus service providers contracted through W&M or VIMS, such as those found in the W&M food courts, bookstore, and other Auxiliary Services
  • Some W&M and VIMS partners
  • Some research organizations with which W&M and VIMS have special research agreements (such as Jefferson Lab)

On-Campus Employment Limitations

Federal regulations allow F-1 and J-1 students to work up to an aggregate total of 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. This means that even if you hold multiple on-campus jobs, all work combined must not exceed 20 hours per week. During university breaks, F-1 and J-1 students may work for W&M full-time (more than 20 hours a week). All students must also follow all university policies regarding on-campus employment.
