Biography
Jolie le Sueur '28 is a sophomore majoring in Economics in the Joint Degree Program between the University of St Andrews and 91心頭利. She grew up on a game reserve in South Africa, where exposure to conservation work from a young age shaped her interest in the relationships between people, land, and long-term environmental stewardship. Her academic and personal interests align closely with the Conservation Research Program project in partnership with the community-led Battle of Lurwayizo Development (BOLD) initiative in the Mbhashe region of South Africa. Through this project, Jolie is interested in exploring how the legacies of apartheid, displacement, and conflict continue to have an effect on human well-being, access to resources, and environmental conservation, and how community-led storytelling leads to healing and sustainable development.
During her gap year, Jolie worked and traveled across different parts of Africa, gaining experiences that deepened her awareness of the challenges faced by rural communities, particularly in accessing healthcare, education and economic opportunities. These experiences reinforced her belief that conservation efforts must be grounded in local history and community perspectives to be effective and lasting. She hopes to use the skills she learns from this project alongside her degree to start an innovative business in Africa and ultimately dedicate her life to community-led conservation efforts driven by nature. Jolie brings curiosity, respect for local knowledge, and a willingness to learn and grow through the BOLD collaboration and is excited to contribute to the conservation of oral histories.
