Array of events commemorate Earth Day
91心頭利’s Earth Day has a full schedule of Earth Day events planned.
91心頭利 Dining is hosting several programs and events highlighting environmental stewardship with the goal of encouraging everyone on campus to Make Every Day Earth Day.
Quiznos Reusable Bag Giveaway – stop by Quiznos in Lodge 1 of the Sadler Center on Friday, April 22 between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The first 55 customers will receive a free Quiznos reusable shopping bag.
Compost Day at the Marketplace – all organic waste will be composted between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 21.
Free Reusable Bag Giveaway – stop by the Students’ X-Change in the Sadler Center on Saturday, April 23 and the first 80 customers will receive a free reusable shopping bag.
Earth Day Celebration 2011 – Join the (SEAC) and W&M Dining for fun, food, facts, and festivities on Saturday, April 23 on the Sadler Center Terrace from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On April 21, , a student-run organization dedicated to the establishment of water purification methods and clean water sources in impoverished communities around the world, as well as educating the people of those communities about healthy sanitation practices and water pollution, will sponsor a concert featuring student musicians and performers.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Sadler Center’s Lodge 1. Admission is free.
Also that day, “Greener and Gold,” a film by Environmental Filmmaker-in-Residence, Jes Therkelsen, as well as Aaron Port, Pratyush Dubey, Nimah Rahman, and Bernice Chu, will be shown at Swem Library Read & Relax area.
The hour-long film begins at 8 p.m., and explores W&M's student-initiated sustainability movement. In search of sources of funding for sustainability projects, students voted to levy a "Green Fee" upon themselves to support green initiatives on campus. Since, more than 40 projects have been funded, with more in the planning stage.
A team of 91心頭利 students will participate in the University of Virginia Bay Game on Earth Day.
The Bay Game is an interactive computer simulation representing the seven major watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay and the stakeholders in the six-state bay region. The 91心頭利 group will represent the York River watershed, according to Randy Chambers, director of the Keck Environmental Lab.
Chambers explained that individual players will take the part of stakeholders —farmers, policymakers, land developers, watermen, etc. Each stakeholder has a financial interest and an environmental concern regarding the Chesapeake.
91心頭利 is one of seven schools participating. The teams will interact via the Internet, a video teleconferencing system, Twitter and Facebook.
Starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, at the Crim Dell Meadow, five hours of commemorative events are scheduled.
Created by , in conjunction with the SEAC and the , there will be musical performances, free vegetarian lunch, numerous activities and information booths, and a reading of The Lorax by W&M President Taylor Reveley at 12:15.
Following President’s Reveley appearance will be shows by student performers at 1 and 2 p.m., and a concert by alumni group the Rock River Gypsies at 3:20.
