The Psychosocial Research Program at Butler Hospital is currently accepting applications for a full-time, paid research assistant to work on studies related to women’s perinatal mental health. The position is available to start in May or June 2026. A second position may become available as well. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, or related field by the start of the position. Spanish language skills are preferred but not required. The position may be attractive for those wishing to pursue graduate school or medical school in the future. Opportunities present at conferences and coauthor publications can be available to those interested. Our previous RAs have been successful gaining acceptance to top-tier doctoral programs in clinical psychology, public health, and related fields after completing the position.

The Research Assistant in Women’s Mental Health will work on National Institute of Health studies examining critical issues in women’s perinatal health, including studies of longitudinal mood and substance use behaviors in the perinatal period, as well as developing interventions for pregnant women with mood and substance use conditions, conducted by Cynthia Battle, Ph.D. For more information, see Dr. Battle’s .

Butler Hospital (est. 1844) is a Brown University-affiliated psychiatric and substance abuse hospital located in Providence, RI. Butler is one of the earliest psychiatric facilities in the United States. The Psychosocial Research Program at Butler is one of several active research groups at the hospital. The program is comprised of academic psychologists, a psychiatrist, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, master’s-level interventionists, and project coordinators. Research is currently funded by federal and private grants; in addition to studies focused on women’s perinatal health, our work focuses on post-hospital transitions, suicide prevention, digital health, mindfulness/acceptance therapies, mood and psychotic disorders, and comorbid conditions conducted in a variety of clinical settings.

Hours: Full-time (Monday through Friday) with some occasional evening hours.

Job Description: Brown University researchers working at Butler Hospital are seeking to hire research assistants for grant-funded studies of women’s perinatal mental health and substance use conditions. Responsibilities include recruiting and tracking subjects, screening electronic medical records, managing databases, preparing reports, and conducting research assessments with psychiatric patients. Additional duties include working with a multidisciplinary team conducting research in a psychiatric hospital setting. Spanish language fluency is preferred but not required. Skills using Microsoft Office, SPSS, and REDCap are a plus.
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field required. Experience with psychology or women’s health research and/or working with psychiatric or perinatal patients desirable.

The , headed by Dr. Koraly Pérez-Edgar at Penn State, is seeking a Human Research Technologist to work on the longitudinal, multi-year NIDA-funded study.

This study focuses on pregnant people and their children in the areas of neurodevelopment, behavior, learning, environmental factors, substance exposure, and cognitive functioning.

The start date for the Human Research Technologist is as soon as possible, but those who will not be available until early this summer (2026) will also be considered

The majority of the Human Research Technologist’s time will be spent working directly with participants and their families through phone calls, email exchanges, and/or face-to-face interactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruitment of participants
  • Coordination of visit scheduling and consent form completion
  • Collect and process data from participants
  • Prepare and process materials needed for each research visit
  • Attend lab meetings, team meetings, and trainings
  • Serve on designated committees within the study when appropriate

Data collection will focus on behavioral assessments of infant and early childhood development, as well as electroencephalograms (EEG) with infants and young children. Other data collection components include biological sample collection and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The Human Research Technologist will be required to perform weekend and evening work as needed to complete the study’s goals.

This work will take advantage of the University’s broad resources, including the and the . This is a two-site study in collaboration with Dr. Aleksandra Zgierska at Penn State’s College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. As such, study personnel will have cross-site, virtual training opportunities.

  • Willingness to learn and develop computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs).

Professional experience working with infants and/or children is highly desirable.
