W&M Faculty Perform Bach in Norfolk
Three W&M Department of Music faculty members who
specialize in performing on historic instruments took part in a period
instrumental performance of a Bach Cantata this fall in Norfolk, VA. They
include organist/harpsichordist Tom Marshall, viola da gamba player Sarah
Glosson, and recorder player Ruth Van Baak Griffioen. These musicians performed
with the Norfolk Chamber Consort directed by Allen Shaffer, at Christ and St.
Luke’s Church on Monday, September 20, 2010. The Countertop Ensemble from
Washington, DC, which concentrates on singing styles appropriate to
Renaissance and Baroque Music, also performed at the event.
The cantata was Bach’s funeral piece, “Gottes Zeit ist die alberbeste Zeit” BWV 106, written in 1707 when Bach was 22 years old.
