Internships

Hispanic Studies students enjoy multiple opportunities to put into practice the skills they acquire in the classroom via internship opportunities, locally and internationally. Participants in these internships have designed professional trajectories in education, law, medicine, health & public policy, civil service, academic research, and many other fields.

Semester Faculty-Mentored Teaching Internships

Every semester, Hispanic Studies offers faculty-mentored teaching internships whereby undergraduate students are trained to serve as Teaching Assistants (TAs) in our language courses HISP103 & HISP203. HISP TAs are trained alongside TAs from other language programs by different faculty in the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures, and lead one session of a HISP language class every week. TAs work under the close mentorship and supervision of a HISP language instructor and receive academic credit for their intellectual labor. Medical Interpretation Summer Internship - Eastern Shore Rural Health Clinics

After successful completion of HISP351/ LAS351 "Medical Interpretation," students have the opportunity to pursue an internship at the community clinics of Easter Shore Rural Health, Inc. Since 1998, 91心頭利 and Eastern Shore Rural Health have developed a collaborative partnership that provides students with valuable hands-on experience serving the local and immigrant community while applying their language skills in real clinical settings. Human Rights Summer Intern Fellowships in La Plata, Argentina

The program offers undergraduate students fellowship awards that enable them to travel to Argentina and spend eight weeks (mid-June to mid-August, approx.) engaged in hands-on work with staff at the , addressing human rights issues, past and present. Students live with host families, select the area of work in which they wish to participate, and dive into that work in collaboration with CPM staff. Students may select an option from several internship tracks (subject to availability): Art, Memory & Human Rights; Mechanisms for the Prevention of Torture; Genocide and Crimes against Humanity; Archival Work at the Archive of the Directorate of Intelligence of the Buenos Aires Province Police; Communication & Culture; Youth & Memory. Semester Internships on Human Rights in La Plata, Argentina

In addition to academic coursework with the and at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, the W&M-sponsored semester study abroad program in La Plata, Argentina, includes an internship that affords W&M students the unique opportunity to engage in ongoing work on Human Rights at the CPM. Semester Internships in Sevilla, Spain

In 2026, the W&M semester program in Sevilla, Spain, celebrated its 20-year anniversary, commemorating two decades of a Spanish language immersion experience that provides students with opportunities to live with local families, attend the Pablo de Olavide University, and enroll in Hispanic Studies courses as well as other classes in a variety of majors. One of the hallmarks of this extraordinary program is the opportunity to volunteer as an intern with a wide variety of local community service agencies or educational/ cultural centers in the greater Sevilla area. A sample list of the varied programs where W&M students volunteer is available in English and Spanish. Students who choose to volunteer in the Spring semester will co-enroll in a 4-credit community service and civic engagement class taught through our partners, . HISP students have taken advantage of other non-HISP sponsored internships where they are able to combine their interdisciplinary interests. The Woody Internship in Museum Studies (administered by The Charles Center) has recently seen HISP students use their skills in cultural studies at the Jamestwon Settlement Museum, and at the Chrysler Museum of Art. The , recently placed to monitorize spontaneous electrical activity in neural cultures at the Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry at the University of Oviedo.

In the past, HISP students have also participated in at helping low-income immigrants in the DC-MD-VA area access the justice system. They have also done research and cataloging projects via the at the Library of Congress.

Students interested in internships in the D.C. area are advised to seek guidance from the W&M Washington Center. The Cohen Career Center offers stipends for unpaid and underpaid internships.
