The Atlantic promotes Emily Gottschalk-Marconi '12 to Managing Editor for Operations

Emily Gottschalk-Marconi

Late last October, W&M Government alumna Emily Gottschalk-Marconi ‘12 became Managing Editor for Operations of The Atlantic demonstrating W&M’s vitality in the world of political journalism.

As a government major, Gottschalk-Marconi was engaged in multiple pursuits. She was the editor of the Pi Sigma Alpha undergraduate political science journal and the treasurer of that organization. She did her honors thesis under Professor Joel Schwartz, who has since retired from the Department. Gottschalk-Marconi’s thesis researched the DREAM Act and its consequences for American democracy. She  also was deeply involved in Scott Foster’s campaign for Williamsburg City Council.

After graduating, she worked for the White House as a staff assistant, before transitioning into roles as Special Assistant to the COO for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Manager of Special Projects for the Democratic National Committee. In 2016, she joined The Atlantic and quickly involved herself with their editorial board. She dutifully kept track of small details, held people accountable for deadlines, and introduced new infrastructure such as AirTable that helped streamline the journal’s activities. Jeffrey Goldberg, in a note commending her promotion, said: “The Atlantic functions as well as it does in large part because Emily Gottschalk-Marconi makes it all happen. Her steel-trap mind, her unflappability, her kindness, creativity and hyper-competence, all combine to make her as close to indispensable as anyone who works here… Emily believes deeply in the mission and culture of The Atlantic, and her devotion to what we do is evident in every aspect of her work.”

Gottschalk-Marconi’s promotion testifies that an education with the W&M Government Department equips students with the essential skills and motivation to succeed in the workplace. Like Gottschalk-Marconi, we know that our graduates will go on to have successful careers and contribute significantly to the organizations, institutions, and communities with whom they may have the pleasure of serving.

From the Government Department, congratulations to Emily Gottschalk-Marconi!
