C. Curriculum Change 1. ENST creation of two tracks for concentration (Science and Policy) held from previous meeting Barbara Watkinson will consult with Timmons on how best to address the rule prohibiting more than a two-course overlap when double majoring. The problem as it stands is with a student who would want to also major in CHEM. A question was also raised on how to assure parity of credit hours so that one track of ENST does not require more credit hours than the other; the simplest solution seems to be required both ENST 101 and 102 of both tracks. U 2. MUS 373 change pre-requisite/note cross-listing with AMST 350 U 3. MUS 383, MUS 385, MUS 387 change pre-requisite III. New fund for merit scholarships outline of a new College Scholars program Barbara Watkinson invited a discussion of the configuration of the Colleges anticipated Scholars program built on the $21 million donation announced at Convocation last Fall. A special committee chaired by her has been reviewing comparable programs at UVa and Chapel Hill and wanted to know EPCs feelings about exempting these uniquely gifted and carefully recruited students from the General Education Requirements that pertain to all other W&M students. There was some concern about depriving these early bloomers of the hallmarks of the W&M educational experience. Another consequence could be inadvertently isolating them from their peers and a shared undergraduate experience by permitting them to declare their interests too exclusively and too early. Watkinson said these concerns had surfaced within her committee as well and that the specially chosen faculty Director of the program would work carefully to prevent those problems and enlist the aid of other seasoned faculty who could keep these special admits aware of the comprehensiveness of a solid undergraduate education. EPC was still cautious of any endorsement of exemptions to our standing GERs without a clearer outline of the planned initiative. IV. Concentration Writing requirement outline a letter to departments and programs -- Postponed until next meeting. V. New Business A discussion of the available of the anti-plagiarism utility TURNITIN.COM was fielded before todays meeting got underway and may be continued in more detail at another meeting of the EPC. Phil Kerns and Jennifer Taylor reported their relevant experiences and triggered a lively exchange. Barbara Watkinson estimated the cost of the site license for TURNITIN.COM at around $3500/semester, a good investment in the eyes of a number of EPC members present. The meeting adjourned at 5:50 pm. Next meeting is scheduled for February 12. Respectfully submitted, George D.
