There will have to be a slight change in the wording, and the EPC members suggested that Joan contact David Lutzer in Mathematics to write the specific recommendation for the faculty meeting in April. The EPC will meet next week to go over the wording and make any changes before the April A&S faculty meeting. Connie Pilkington mentioned that PSY 301 and PSY 302 are not being offered in the future. If they are offered at a later time, the Psychology Department will request EPC for a number change; therefore, the GER 1 designation will not be a problem. She also mentioned that there was an error in the report from the GER 1 working group. On page 3, third paragraph, in the middle, Уand only psy 301 classes were taught in size of > 20.Ф Should be changed to read, Уonly psy 301 lab classes were taught in size of > 20.Ф Digital Information Literacy (DIL) pilot project results; determine what recommendations to make to the A&S faculty The first round of the DIL project sent to students Fall 2001 had a very poor response, only 7 out of 200 students completing the project. The second round January 2002 students were offered the fulfillment of their concentration computing proficiency requirement, if they successfully completed the project. 95 out of 200 students completed the project. EPC members agreed that the project should continue and should be offered to every freshman admitted in Fall 2002. The projects will certify the computing skills of incoming students. Students will receive the computing proficiency requirement for successfully completing the project, but it will not necessarily meet the concentration computing skills in all departments. The project will be graded as Pass/Fail. If a student fails the project, he/she can take the project again at a later time with changes in the modules. This summer the DIL committee members will work on the project by expanding the modules and tutorials and trying to get the УbugsФ out. New Business Ц УDomestic Study AwayФ Dean Watkinson brought to the attention of the EPC members that students who take a semester or year off to study at another domestic university or college are allowed by the Academic Advising Office to count courses as transfer credit which meet concentration, minor, proficiency, and GER requirements. Students who study abroad or take courses during summer school elsewhere must have all courses approved prior to enrollment, and they cannot count courses toward requirements without petitioning the Committee on Degrees (COD). With the new reentry policy in place, students are not formally disenrolled from William and Mary and are kept on the books. Dean Watkinson suggested the rule should be the same for all students who study away for a semester, year, or summer. Connie Pilkington moved that the catalog be changed. On page 66, third paragraph to read: УDomestic Study Away to include Summer School Elsewhere.Ф Satoshi Ito seconded. Passed unanimously. Dean Watkinson will notify Sharon Reed and the Academic Advising Office of the new ruling concerning Domestic Study Away. Old Business УIf it can count, it must countФ policy CAS request to restrict enrollment to 15 credits for students on probation Time ran short; so the above will be brought up at another meeting. The meeting adjourned at 2:30 pm. The next EPC meeting is scheduled for 20 March 2002 at 1:00 pm, in UC, Colony Room.
