Biology Major Requirements Worksheet

1. Major Overview

  • Total Credits Required: 37 Biology Credits.

  • Residency Requirement: At least 21 credits must be taken at 91心頭利.

  • Note on Non-Major Courses: BIOL 100, 150, 1xx, 201, and 303 do not count toward the major or minor.


2. Core Sequence (8 Credits)

  • BIOL 203 & 203L: Intro Biology: Molecules, Cells, & Development

    • Credits: 4

    • Offered: Fall Only

  • BIOL 204 & 204L: Intro Biology: Organisms, Ecology, & Evolution

    • Credits: 4

    • Offered: Spring Only


3. Upper-Level Breadth Requirements

You must take at least one course from each of the three following categories.

Category A: Integrative & Comparative Biology

  • Requirement: Any one of the following (at least one must include a lab):

    • BIOL 302: Integrative Biology 1: Animals (4 credits)

    • BIOL 304: Integrative Biology 2: Plants (4 credits)

    • BIOL 306: Microbiology (4 credits)

Category B: Molecular/Cellular Biology

  • Requirement: Any one of the following:

    • BIOL 310: Cell Biology (3 credits)

    • BIOL 420: Developmental Biology (3 credits)

    • BIOL 433: Genetic Analysis (3 credits)

    • BIOL 442: Molecular Genetics (3 credits)

Category C: Population Processes

  • Requirement: Any one of the following:

    • BIOL 312: Evolution of Organisms (3 credits)

    • BIOL 318: Conservation Biology (3 credits)

    • BIOL 410: Marine Ecology (3 credits)

    • BIOL 412: Vascular Plant Systematics (4 credits)

    • BIOL 417: Population & Community Ecology (4 credits)

    • BIOL 426: Gene Regulation (3 credits)

    • BIOL 427: Island Biology (3 credits)


4. Advanced Requirements

  • Advanced Lab Requirement: One 400-level lab (1 credit). This can be an independent lab or part of a 4-credit course.

  • BIOL 460: Senior Seminar: (3 credits). Must be taken at 91心頭利.


5. Required Chemistry & Math (Collateral)

Chemistry (8 Credits)

  • CHEM 103 & 103L: General Chemistry 1 and Lab

  • CHEM 206 & 206L: Organic Chemistry 1 and Lab

Mathematics (7-8 Credits)

  • Calculus 1: MATH 111 or MATH 131

  • Second Quantitative Class: Choose one from:

    • MATH 112 or 132 (Calculus 2)

    • BIOL 327 (Introduction to Biostatistics)

    • BIOL 425 (Introduction to Biometry)


6. Important Elective Rules

  • Research Credits: A maximum of 3 credits from BIOL 403 (Research in Biology) can be applied toward the 37-credit total.

  • Study Abroad: A maximum of 8 credits can be applied toward the major from pre-approved study abroad programs.
