BAM! (Birding And…Medicine!?!)

A small group of students participating in an early morning bird-watching field outing on the 91¿´Æ¬Íø campus

Course Concept

This Spring course builds on the writings of birdwatcher-physicians who have observed that the skills used to diagnose illness are also essential for identifying birds. Students will hone these diagnostic abilities through:

  • Early morning field experiences with campus birds.

  • Discussions with a local physician.

  • Selected readings of physician-authored writing.

Professional Development

Along the way, students will gather fresh perspectives and stories that serve as excellent material for medical school essays and interviews. These field experiences provide the tools for becoming better physicians by practicing observational precision.

Course Format & Capacity

  • Activities: Includes weekly field outings and classroom discussions.

  • Class Size: Limited to approximately 10 students to ensure a high-impact, hands-on experience.
