Adams Garden
History and Dedication
Located opposite College Corner, Adams Garden was dedicated in November 1986 to honor the memory of Gregory S. Adams ’81.
- Community Effort: The garden was made possible by more than 200 donors.
- Stewardship: Much of the garden's success is attributed to Madelynn Watkinson, a volunteer who provided dedicated care for the space starting in 1986.
Botanical Highlights
Originally a bulb and azalea garden, this space has evolved to showcase tropical and semi-tropical species alongside unusual trees.
Key Specimens:
- Asian Loquat Tree (Eriobotrya japonica): A relative of pome fruits (apples and cherries) that uniquely blooms in autumn and ripens in spring. While the tree thrives in Williamsburg's climate, the winters are generally too harsh for the fruit to reach full maturity.
- Umbrella Pine (Sciadopitys verticillata): A unique conifer nestled against the north wall.
- Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis): Renowned for its brilliant and reliable autumn foliage.
