Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Beckman Scholars Program, students must meet the following standards:

  • Academic Standing: Must be a rising junior or senior.
  • GPA Requirement: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 is required.
  • Career Focus: Preference is given to students pursuing a Ph.D. and a career in scientific research. 
  • Time Commitment: Must commit to two consecutive summers of full-time research (10 weeks, 40 hours/week) and part-time research during the academic year (15-20 hours/week).

Approved Faculty Mentors

In accordance with the Beckman Foundation, applicants must work in the laboratory of an approved mentor.

  • Biology Mentors: Lizabeth Allison, Daniel Cristol, Mark Forsyth, Paul Heideman, Shanta Hinton, Oliver Kerscher, Margaret Saha, Diane Shakes, John Swaddle.
  • Chemistry Mentors: Elizabeth Harbron, Robert Hinkle, Lisa Landino, J.C. Poutsma, Jonathan Scheerer, Douglas Young.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted as a single PDF via email to Professor Margaret Saha no later than March 12th.

Application Package Checklist:

  1. Research Proposal: Formal proposal (maximum 1500 words).
  2. Personal Statement: Outline of career plans and how this scholarship enhances them.
  3. Research History: A detailed description of past research experiences.
  4. Academic Records: An unofficial transcript and a current CV.
  5. Letters of Recommendation: Three letters from STEM faculty must be submitted directly to Professor Saha (not included in the student's PDF).

Review and Selection

Proposals are reviewed by an evaluation committee consisting of the Chairs of Biology and Chemistry, faculty representatives from both departments, and a member of the Dean's office. For questions regarding the process, please contact Professor Margaret Saha or Professor Rob Hinkle.
